Brand new online storefront for 30 year old business in downton Brattleboro VT
Maple Leaf Music has been in business for over 30 years carrying some of the best stringed instruments around. I was approached to take on the job of coming up with the “back-end” of this website in order to make it easy for the shops owner (one of the most non-technical people I have ever worked with) to regularly add new content to her site while at the same time making everything more easily accessible for the front end user.
WordPress had the tools and felxability we needed to make Maple Leaf Music come to life
The previous Maple Leaf Music website was built right around the year 2000 and was the last time any major amount of design or programming work had been done to the site! Needless to say there was a lot of work to be done both in design and more importantly in creating a much more efficient product inventory management system. We decided to kill two birds with one stone with this project by eliminating the old Access database that Maple Leaf Music was using to track all their products by building inventory management controls directly into the user interface elements of her new WordPress website.
WordPress custom post types are the key to making this whole new system work
Using WordPress custom post types we were able to develop individual section managers for every type of instrument and product available in their store. Why individual custom post types for all types of instruments? This project was a first hand crash course eduction for me in the differences and nuances associated with stringed instruments. The fact of the matter is that while these instruments share some similar characteristics and features and also use some of the same terminologies they don’t mean the same thing between instrument lines. This complicated things on our end a bit more than we initially anticipated because it meant that to build the site properly we had to create ELEVEN individual custom post types to manage all the product types available in the shop.
How did it turn out?
The absolute measure of success of this project was always about increasing sales (how could it not be right?) and I am happy to report since we launched the site at the end of 2011 Maple Leaf Music has received 90 requests for instruments from their new website and have had an extremely successful start to 2012 in terms of sales and revenue. The site continues to motor right along and they are adding new products, image galleries, youtube video demos and soon a fully integrated blog to the package! The new Maple Leaf Website has been an excellent success and has transformed the way that they do business and engage with their customers online.
